I know that trying something new can feel daunting. Walking into an unfamiliar space and not knowing what to expect takes courage.
By finding your way here, you've already begun the journey....
I hope the information on this page helps you feel more confident, comfortable and excited for your first Hatha, Yin or Private class. Whenever you're ready, I'll be here to welcome you to the studio in Fernwood, Newark.

If you've ever thought, "I'm not flexible enough for yoga," or felt that yoga wasn't really for people like you, these classes may surprise you.
Classes are designed for older adults and focus on mindful movement rather than performance. We pay attention to how a pose feels, not how it looks, exploring variations and adaptations that support your body as it is today. There's no expectation to be flexible, fit or experienced, just a willingness to be curious.
Whether you're completely new to yoga and mindfulness, returning after a long break, or have been practicing for years and enjoy a slower, more intentional approach, you'll find a welcoming space here in Fernwood, Newark.

If you're new to yoga, Hatha is a wonderful place to start. This class combines a range of movement, stretches and mindful breathing to help you feel stronger, more mobile and more connected to your body.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
A poem to set the tone for the practice
Simple breathing and mindfulness exercises
Gentle warm-up movements for the joints and muscles
A sequence of standing and floor-based yoga poses
Options and adaptations throughout to suit different bodies and abilities
Gentle stretching and slower movements towards the end of class
A final relaxation

Yin is a slower and more restful class. Rather than moving from pose to pose, you'll settle into comfortable, supported stretches and stay there for a few minutes at a time. Many people find Yin deeply calming.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
A poem to set the tone for the practice
Simple breathing and mindfulness exercises
Floor-based poses supported with props
Poses held for around 3-5 minutes at a time
Plenty of guidance on getting comfortable and adjusting positions
Very little physical effort compared with other styles of yoga
A final relaxation

A private session is a different way of working entirely. Instead of fitting into a class plan, the practice is built around you, your interests and goals. Choose a 1:1 or share the experience with someone else in a 2:1.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
A short questionnaire before the session to shape the focus of your practice
Breathing and mindfulness practices, introduced where they feel useful for you
Movement guided by how you’re feeling on the day. This may be more active, or more restorative depending on what’s needed
Space to explore questions, ideas or aspects of yoga that go beyond the physical practice
A final relaxation

I've been teaching yoga for seven years and somewhere along the way it became clear to me that the people I most wanted to teach were older adults in Newark and the surrounding areas.
My classes are built around movement and mindfulness in equal measure. The physical side matters as I want you to feel stronger, more mobile, more able to enjoy the life you have. But I think the mindfulness is where something quieter and more lasting happens, and I give it the time it deserves.
I also bring a poem into every class. Poetry, like yoga, can feel a little intimidating from the outside. It's hard to know where to start, or whether it's really for you. I'm still very much finding my way with it but there's something about exploring it as a group that I've found really brings a class together.
